rock songs in history, and he even founded the Black Rock Coalition.
But what Guitar World readers really want to know is…
What led to the writing and recording of “Cult of Personality,” and how do you feel about the fact that the song continues to be a radio staple and is a big part of the Guitar Hero video game franchise? —Moko Nishihara
The writing of “Cult of Personality” was one of the very best days in the life of Living Colour. That might seem obvious, but what I mean to say is, we started the day without “Cult of Personality,” and when that one session was over, we had the song. That day, we didn’t get in our own way. It was a really special day.
I had met the Guitar Hero guys very early on at a NAMM show, and barely anyone was paying attention to them. They showed me how the controller worked. I tried it, I sucked. But I thought, Wow, this is interesting. The next thing you know, Guitar Hero blew up. By the time Guitar Hero III came around, they told me they wanted to include “Cult.” I’m just proud that we are on the same edition of Guitar Hero as the Sex Pistols.

Rock Band is a series of music video games developed by Harmonix Music Systems and MTV Games, and distributed by Electronic Arts for the Nintendo DS, iPhone, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, and Xbox 360 game systems. The series, inspired by Harmonix's previous efforts on the Guitar Hero series, allows up to four players to simulate the performance of popular rock music songs by playing with controllers modeled after musical instruments. Players can play the lead guitar, bass guitar, and drums parts to songs, as well as sing through a USB microphone. Players are scored on their ability to match scrolling musical "notes" while playing instruments, or by their ability to match the singer's pitch on vocals.
The first game in the series, Rock Band, was released in 2007 shortly after Harmonix was acquired by MTV Games, and its sequel Rock Band 2 was released in 2008. Harmonix has also regularly provided downloadable content, in the form of additional downloadable songs on a weekly basis through the game consoles' network services. To date, over 1000 songs are available between those on the game discs and through downloadable content. Harmonix has also created standalone Track Packs that either contain a selection of downloadable content, or a selection of band-specific songs. The company has also designed the Rock Band Network to allow bands and labels to publish their songs as Rock Band tracks that can be purchased by players. To date, over 13 million copies of Rock Band titles have been sol with more than $1 billion in total sales, and, with more than 1000 songs in the franchise library, over 60 million songs have been downloaded.

We're bringing six more live Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tracks to the Rock Band Music Library this week. This brings the number of tracks we have from the group's The Live Anthology album, which was released this fall, to 12. The album includes songs spanning over 30 years of concerts, from 1978 to 2007. I'm personally blown away by this. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were touring and playing some of what is now considered quintessential classic rock before most of you reading this were probably born. "Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Pack 02" includes live recordings of "A Woman in Love," "Breakdown," "Century City," "Jammin' Me," "Nightwatchman" and "The Waiting."
We also have "Blue Jeans," from Philadelphia-based rockers Silvertide, and we're debuting Phoenix to the Rock Band universe this week. If you guys haven't checked out this band yet, do it! The French indie rockers are nominated for a Grammy® Award for Best Alternative Album for their 2009 release, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. HMXkatattack and I got to see them live in New York City in the fall and WHOA! They put on a great show, the songs are fun and danceable, and I'm psyched to try out my French accent when playing them in Rock Band. Two songs from the Grammy-nominated album are coming to Rock Band – "1901" and "Lisztomania." I've been listening to the band as I've been writing this, and I am going to go home and download the album tonight. So catchy!
